What are Etsy's official tag rules?
Etsy allows up to 13 tags per listing and caps each tag at 20 characters. Tags may contain letters, numbers, and spaces; apostrophes and hyphens are allowed inside words but a tag cannot start with them. Accented letters count as letters. Multi-word phrases are not just allowed but encouraged.

Should you use all 13 tags?
Yes. This is one of the few optimization questions Etsy answers directly: "Using all 13 tags, adding variety to your tags, adding all the relevant attribute options, and categorizing your items as specifically as you can may all help increase the chance that your listings will match with a query." An empty tag slot is a search query you chose not to compete for. The checker counts your unused slots so you can fill them.
What makes a strong Etsy tag in 2026?
A strong tag is a phrase a buyer would actually type. Etsy's examples are "silver earrings" and "minimalist jewelry", and its advice is to use "a diverse array of tags": mix what the item is, what it is made of, who it is for, and the occasion. Tags are also the official home for buyer-minded phrases like "gift for her", which Etsy's title guidance now says to keep out of titles. Single words are weak because they compete with millions of listings on one generic term; a two or three word phrase carries the same word plus intent.
Do tags need to repeat words from your title?
Repeating your exact title phrases across all 13 tags wastes slots. Etsy's search reads title and tags together as part of its holistic view of the listing, and Etsy explicitly recommends variety in tags. Use tag slots for phrasings and synonyms your title could not fit: regional spellings, materials, styles, occasions, and recipient phrases. The checker flags duplicate tags for exactly this reason.
